Potential Contribution of Steel Slag to Safe and Sustainable Lettuce Production
2nd International Congress on Biotech Solutions for Sustainability (Biotech4Sus'25), Gebze Technical University, Kocaeli, Türkiye · 21–24 October 2025
Electric-arc-furnace slag was tried at several doses on wheat and lettuce, weighing what it adds against what it risks; with Matil.
Aim: To find out whether steel slag, a by-product of steelmaking, can safely be used as a soil amendment and fertilizer in crop production.
Methods: Electric arc furnace slag is analysed for its element contents and applied to soil at different rates. Wheat and lettuce trials follow plant growth, yield and element accumulation in the tissue, so that both the agronomic benefit and the safety of the material are assessed.
Scope: Run as a GTÜ TTO R&D project with Matil and completed in 2024.
