Can Bacteria Turn Rice Straw into a Biofertilizer for Rice?
2nd International Congress on Biotech Solutions for Sustainability (Biotech4Sus'25), Gebze Technical University, Kocaeli, Türkiye · 21–24 October 2025
Turning rice straw and lignocellulolytic bacteria into a biofertilizer for healthier paddy soils and higher rice yields.
Aim: To develop a biofertilizer from the rice straw left in the field after harvest, using lignocellulolytic bacteria, that improves the health of paddy soils and the yield of rice.
Methods: Bacteria able to break down rice straw are selected and formulated together with the straw. The product candidates are then assessed in rice trials for their effects on soil properties, plant growth and yield.
Scope: Carried out under the TÜBİTAK 1003 programme (TÜBİTAK and TAGEM joint call), led by Nüzhet Cenk Sesal; Ümit Barış Kutman and Bahar Yıldız Kutman take part as researchers.
