Biostimulant effects of Cystoseira barbata extracts on wheat

Extracts of the brown seaweed Cystoseira barbata as biostimulants for wheat growth and stress tolerance.

Aim: To find out whether extracts of the brown seaweed Cystoseira barbata act as biostimulants on wheat, and what they contribute to its growth and stress tolerance.

Methods: Extracts of different composition are prepared from the seaweed by different methods. They are applied as a seed treatment, as a foliar spray and through the nutrient solution; seedling growth, yield, quality and the response to salt stress are measured, relating the composition of an extract to what it does.

Scope: Carried out under the TÜBİTAK 3501 Career Development Programme, led by Asst. Prof. Bahar Yıldız Kutman with Asst. Prof. Berat Z. Haznedaroğlu of the Institute of Environmental Sciences at Boğaziçi University as researcher, and completed in 2025.
