Our vertical farming R&D facility with Plant Factory opens at GTÜ

The R&D facility for indoor vertical farming built through the collaboration between GTÜ and Plant Factory opened on 28 July 2022 in the greenhouse area of the Institute of Biotechnology on the Gebze Technical University campus. The project coordinator and advisor is Asst. Prof. Ümit Barış Kutman of our lab, vice director of the Institute. GTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Muhammed Hasan Aslan and Institute Director Prof. Dr. Işıl Kurnaz attended the opening.

The facility will grow produce with low water and fertilizer use, no pesticide residues and a standardized nutrient content, and its nutritional value and food safety will be analyzed and documented. Crops that are not commonly grown in conventional farming will also be adapted to the system, and methods and recipes will be developed for produce suited to people with special dietary needs.
